This is just a reminder that today is a Holy Day of Obligation, celebrating the Immaculate Conception. Many people think today celebrates when Jesus was conceived, however today we celebrated the day Mary was conceived without sin. That's right, Mary was sinless. God spared her from Original Sin and spared her from the concupiscence that leads us all to sin. But why?
Because God can.
Because Jesus, our perfect Creator, desired an unstained, unblemished home to dwell. Because He is trying to show us that Mary is the New Eve - being a virgin, without sin, and approached by an angel with a message. However, unlike Eve who denied her receptivity to God's plan, Mary embraced it and because of her yes we have a Savior.
Simply because we turn our focus at times to Mary doesn't mean we turn our focus from Jesus. Rather, by looking at Mary she points us to her Son "do whatever He tells you..." By looking at Mary we see that it is possible to "be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect..." By looking at Mary we have an example of the perfect Christian - someone that we should all strive to be.
So, today we attend the Eucharist (Eucharista, "Thanksgiving") to give thanks to God for His mother. Because we know that Jesus gives thanks for her everyday.
